Digital intelligence & high-tech production – INOMETA presents pioneering roller production

Following the successful opening of its expanded production facility in May 2025, INOMETA is now taking the next logical step toward future technology. With one of the largest single investments in the company’s history, the specialist for high-tech rollers has comprehensively modernized its production at its Herford site.
In an article in Verpackung & Converting, Ansgar Wessendorf presents the comprehensive modernization of roller production at INOMETA. The report shows how INOMETA is responding to market challenges with digital intelligence, networked processes, and forward-looking training – and positioning itself as a technology leader for industries such as battery production, printing, and converting.

The next level of technology in roller construction

The core of the expansion are four highly automated production cells specifically designed for the mass production of coated aluminum rollers. These cells handle complex machining processes fully automatically with industrial robots, accommodating processing lengths of up to two meters and variable diameters. This achieves a level of precision and process reliability that sets new industry standards.
The focus extends beyond mere process reliability, quality, and efficiency. Digital control systems and adaptive processes have forged a seamless, intelligent manufacturing solution that reduces reject rates, shortens delivery times, and measurably enhances product quality. The new production environment is further complemented by an automated pallet warehouse and intelligent space utilization. Existing production areas were strategically relocated to an adjacent building, allowing the conversion to be implemented efficiently without the need for new construction.

Securing the future through training and automation

INOMETA is addressing market challenges – particularly the demographically induced shortage of skilled workers – with a two-pronged strategy: the targeted qualification of its own junior staff and advanced automation. The company is currently training 15 apprentices in the technical field. “In addition to the targeted training of our own junior staff, automation is the second main pillar with which we actively counteract the acute shortage of skilled workers and at the same time ensure the sustainable safeguarding of our production and supply chain capacities,” explains Managing Director Christof Schotten in the interview with Verpackungsdruck & Converting.

Fully automated roller production and digital networking

What begins with precision and automation in the new production line is taken further with digital intelligence. With INOid®, rollers are given a unique digital identity directly during production via QR code or RFID tag. All data relevant to quality and use, such as material certificates, maintenance histories, or calibration protocols, can be accessed centrally, audit-proof, and in real-time – regardless of location, paperless, and directly on the component. Especially in strictly regulated industries like battery or fuel cell production, the system offers clear advantages in terms of traceability and auditability.
With INOid®, INOMETA is actively integrating its own roller portfolio into digital processes. In combination with INOlogic®, the cloud-based platform for condition monitoring, an intelligent overall system is created: INOid® provides the structured database, while INOlogic® makes conditions visible and controllable. This transforms every roller into an active sector of a networked, predictive production environment.
