For several years, BMW has been relying on the CFRP competence of XPERION COMPONENTS which is based in Laudenbach, and has therefore installed the previous CFRP drive shaft into the M3 and M4 models since 2014. The further development of the CFRP drive shaft which has now been honored in the Düsseldorf Swissôtel is being installed into the BMW M3, M4 and M4 GTS motor vehicle models since June 2016. Especially for such an important force-transmitting component, the use of CFRP is a highly beneficial choice: Low-weight, stability and a high natural frequency help to conserve power, and also enable tight installation spaces.
The special features of this CFRP drive shaft aren’t just limited to the very low weight of less than 7 kg, they also include the actual sophisticated engineering: An improved design combined with a material utilization which has an even more precise alignment to the requirements, optimized the force transmission and thus the connection of the metal elements to the CFRP tube. At the same time, the even more rigid connection to the rear axle transmission created by BMW was able to achieve improved characteristics, in particular a higher natural bending frequency.
